The Delft Perspective

What?
Participation project and exhibition at Museum Prinsenhof Delft

My roll?
Story gatherer and exhibition creator

When?
2022-2023

The Delft Perspective is a participation project by Museum Prinsenhof Delft, in which the museum seeks new connections with the city of Delft, by linking the city’s history and that of William of Orange with current social themes. I worked on the theme “safety”. Most of my work was based around the co-creation with four groups of Delft inhabitants: refugees and migrants, students, descendants of colonialism in the Caribbean, and youths from the local social-cultural foundation CANIDREAM.

I formed bonds with our participants, gathered their stories through interviews and video’s, and translated these to exhibition texts and photos. Other images I created of the process were used for the website, to provide even more depth and context. Additionally, I did the necessary historical research for the link to Delft history, and created a guided tour that can still be taken today.

Perhaps the most important aspect of my role was to form and protect a safe space.

Perhaps the most important aspect of my role was to form and protect a safe space. I had experience working at refugee camps and knew that the topic of safety, or lack thereof, would be a loaded one. As it could be for other participants. Part of the strength of this exhibition would depend on their openness, so it was crucial all participants would feel safe with me and with the museum. The public exhibition, which stood on the street next to the museum for several months, was visited and admired daily by many Delft citizens and visitors.
