Archiving by Design

What?
Co-creation for the accessing of the Amsterdams Medieval Hospital Archives

My roll?
Multimedial creator

When?
2020–2021

Why preserve archives from the Middle Ages? And how do we make them interesting to today’s youth? These questions were posed and answered by Amsterdam students for the Medieval City Archives, through a series of labs.

The youths came up with all the concepts, and my job was to coach them and help them visualize it all. Along with heritage expert and project leader Marielle Callenbach-Kruithof and concept creator Jephta Hermelink, we worked on prototypes of products that could make the centuries-old sources appealing to a younger generation.

Don’t just fill in what you think will enthuse youths, give them the necessary tools and information to tell you themselves!

For example, the students made a magazine about the LGBTQ+ community with a medieval-religious twist, a walking app (similar to Pokemon Go) to stroll through medieval Amsterdam, a medieval personality test, medieval fashion line, and so much more.

The students then pitched these products to the archive administrators, and the class is currently still being offered to elementary and middle/high school students. If we want to get youths (more) involved with heritage, we could really use their perspective on inspiration and value to look at heritage in a new light. And of course, hopefully we’ll create a sense of enthusiasm and excitement within them. Additionally, this project illustrates that co-creation is very helpful in effectively reaching a target audience. Don’t just fill in what you think will enthuse youths, give them the necessary tools and information to tell you themselves!
